1959

Civil Engineering grad Bruce Douglas ’59 went on to earn his master’s and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Arizona. He began his tenure as a professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1964, and became involved in earthquake engineering research, establishing the Earthquake Engineering program at UNR. His early work on the field testing of bridges gained international recognition, and the UNR Earthquake Engineering Laboratory has become the largest of its kind in the United States. Upon retiring in 1999, Bruce co-founded the Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno (SMSToR), which has since rated more than 200 varieties, learned how to sail, and enjoyed carpentry, camping, and playing the bagpipes. Bruce died on August 4, 2020.
