Arthur Lie her S.J., ’69, M.Div. ’84, STM ’86 has been named by the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., as the next rector of the Santa Clara Jesuit Community. He will assume office on 31 July 2016, the feast of St. Ignatius Loyola, and as rector will become a member of the Board of Trustees of the University.

Fr. Lie her earned a PhD in History at Indiana University, Bloomington. An alumnus and current chair of the history department, Fr. Lie her has taught at Santa Clara since 1986 with a scholarly focus on Latin American history. He has generously served the community in multiple capacities throughout his time at the University. In addition to his teaching, Fr. Lie her has served our students as resident minister, faculty adviser, and Jesuit faculty in residence for more than two decades. His engagement in shared governance and membership on many committees over the years have contributed to the well-being of the University community.  As a proud and active member of the alumni community he has been a remarkable ambassador of the University.
Fr. Lie her will follow Fr. Michael Zampelli, S.J., who has served as rector since 2010. At the conclusion of his term as rector, Fr. Zampelli will spend the 2016-2017 academic year as visiting professor at Fordham University and will return to Santa Clara following his time there.
