1948

Longtime local San Jose leader Frank Fiscalini ’48 died Dec. 8, 2023, after living a fantastically productive life of 101 years. Frank was a first-generation American, one of seven children born to Italian immigrants. He came to Santa Clara University on a baseball scholarship. His education was put on hold when he enlisted during World War II before he eventually earned a master’s at Stanford and a doctorate in education development from University of Northern Colorado. As a teacher, principal, and eventually superintendent for East Side Union High School District, Frank worked tirelessly to increase opportunities for minority students to succeed in school and beyond. As a civic leader, he was integral in the development of SAP center and the Children’s Discovery Museum, as well as the renovations of St Joseph’s Cathedral, Opera San Jose, and Italian American Heritage Foundation, to name a few. Frank also served eight years on San Jose City Council, including several as vice mayor. At SCU, he was a member of the “Dirty Dozen,” a group of alumni  dedicated to mentoring baseball student athletes. He was also a SCU basketball season ticket holder since 1949.
